Position Overview
The Store Director provides strategic leadership across all store departments, including talent management, guest experience, financial performance, operational excellence, safety, and team development.
The role requires strong leadership skills to build an engaged team, drive sales growth, manage store priorities, and create an inclusive environment where team members can succeed.
Key Responsibilities
Guest Experience & Team Leadership
- Cultivate a guest-centric and engaged team.
- Consistently deliver guest experience commitments.
- Lead with confidence, care, and purpose to drive a guest-obsessed culture.
- Hold direct reports accountable for exceptional guest experience through consistent operations, accountability, development, training, and recognition.
- Celebrate wins, align teams, and prioritize actions that drive results.
- Engage with the community to represent the Target brand and build local connections.
- Lead talent culture through onboarding, development, and growth of leaders.
- Create sustainable and equitable talent strategies in partnership with HR.
- Recruit, hire, and retain passionate team members.
- Oversee scheduling processes to meet business needs and provide a consistent guest experience.
- Implement leadership schedules aligned with guest and business needs, including weekends, mornings, evenings, overnight, and seasonal adjustments.
- Promote inclusivity by valuing diverse voices, approaches, and experiences.
- Invest in personal and team training to enhance skills and capabilities.
- Drive a guest-focused culture across in-store and digital experiences, including Target App, Target Circle Card, Target Circle, Drive Up, Order Pick Up, and Circle 360 same-day delivery.
Business Performance & Operational Excellence
- Review store guest, financial, and team metrics to identify gaps and improve performance.
- Build and execute plans to operate efficiently and support future growth.
- Lead execution of operational best practices across the store.
- Identify operational shortage opportunities, create action plans, and establish accountability.
- Use financial, operational, safety, food safety, team, and guest reports to make business decisions.
- Drive financial accountability through sales trends, leadership headcount guidelines, payroll management, and overtime guidance.
- Teach teams how their roles contribute to sales growth and total store profitability.
- Assess competition and leverage guest insights and feedback to drive business results.
- Build relationships within the store community to address local needs.
- Partner with field teams to solve problems and drive continuous operational improvement.
- Set clear priorities by balancing competing demands.
Safety, Security & Compliance
- Own the safety culture and performance of the store.
- Model and recognize safe behaviors.
- Identify and correct hazards.
- Support incident response and validate investigations to drive sustainable solutions.
- Maintain accountability for team and guest safety.
- Validate an in-store security culture focused on deterrence, response, and resolution.
- Ensure merchandise protection strategies are executed according to best practices.
- Follow safe and secure training and processes as a key carrier.
- Address store emergency and compliance needs.
- Assume store-level leadership on duty (LOD) responsibilities during assigned shifts.
- Demonstrate ethical conduct, safety, food safety, and compliance standards.
Store Leadership Experience
- Managing a large team of hourly team members, leaders, and leaders of leaders.
- Recruiting, selecting, talent management, and talent planning across store departments.
- Building and leading a guest-first culture.
- Understanding retail financials, including payroll, profit and loss, and sales growth.
- Creating store-specific strategies and managing teams to deliver results.
- Understanding sales trends, inventory management, guest shopping patterns, pricing, promotions, and specialty businesses.
- Planning total store quarterly business priorities and managing teams to achieve sales goals.
- Building partnerships with Asset Protection, Food & Beverage, Human Resources, and other key partners.
- Making business decisions by assessing market competition and guest insights.
Required Qualifications
- Four-year degree or equivalent experience.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Team leadership and engagement experience.
- Strong cognitive skills, including problem analysis, decision-making, financial analysis, and quantitative analysis.
- Ability to manage conflict and hold others accountable.
- Ability to relate and interact with all levels of the organization.
- Welcoming and helpful attitude.
- Ability to manage workload and prioritize tasks independently.
- Ability to remain focused and composed in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to communicate using multiple frequency devices and operate handheld scanners and technology equipment.
Additional Requirements
- Ability to access all areas of the building to respond to guest or team member issues.
- Ability to interpret instructions, reports, and information.
- Ability to accurately handle cash register operations as needed.
- Ability to climb ladders as needed.
- Ability to scan, handle, and move merchandise safely, including frequently lifting or moving merchandise up to 44 pounds without additional assistance.
- Ability to work in varying temperatures, humidity, and other elements while performing certain job duties.
- Ability to remain mobile throughout scheduled shifts.
- Flexible work schedule including nights, weekends, holidays, and reliable attendance.

Compensation & Benefits
The pay range for this position is USD $106,000 – $212,000 annually.
Pay is based on several factors which vary based on position. These include labor markets and in some instances may include education, work experience, and certifications.
