Microsoft is seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer to join its Industry Solutions Engineering (ISE) team. This role provides an opportunity to collaborate directly with strategic customers, develop innovative cloud-based solutions, contribute to open-source technologies, and solve complex business challenges using modern software engineering practices.

About the Industry Solutions Engineering (ISE) Team

The Industry Solutions Engineering (ISE) team is a global engineering organization that partners directly with customers to solve complex business challenges using cloud technologies, software engineering, artificial intelligence, and open-source innovation.

ISE engineers work side-by-side with customer engineering teams, Microsoft product organizations, partners, and open-source communities to develop scalable, high-impact solutions that accelerate digital transformation.

As part of this team, you will work with a wide variety of technologies—not limited to Microsoft platforms—while contributing reusable solution patterns and open-source software assets that strengthen the Microsoft ecosystem.

Position Overview

The Senior Software Engineer will design, build, optimize, and deliver cloud-native software solutions while collaborating with cross-functional teams of software engineers, data scientists, technical program managers, designers, and customer engineering teams.

This position requires strong software engineering fundamentals, modern cloud development expertise, customer engagement experience, and a passion for solving real-world technical challenges.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with customers and internal stakeholders to gather technical and business requirements.
  • Design scalable software architectures, applications, platforms, and cloud-based services.
  • Identify technical dependencies and prepare detailed design documentation.
  • Develop, optimize, debug, refactor, and maintain high-quality software solutions.
  • Improve software performance, maintainability, scalability, and return on investment (ROI).
  • Leverage deep technical expertise to guide product development and engineering decisions.
  • Partner with project managers and stakeholders to develop project plans, release plans, and work items.
  • Serve as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) for software systems and services.
  • Monitor production systems for availability, reliability, and operational health.
  • Respond to incidents, troubleshoot issues, and restore services when required.
  • Drive continuous improvements in system performance, monitoring, observability, and operational excellence.
  • Research and adopt emerging technologies, engineering practices, and software development patterns.
  • Contribute to Microsoft’s collaborative engineering culture and company values.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline.
  • Minimum four (4) years of technical engineering experience developing software using one or more of the following programming languages:
  • C
  • C++
  • C#
  • Java
  • JavaScript
  • Python

Equivalent professional experience may also be considered.

Additional Requirement

  • Microsoft is unable to sponsor work visas for this position due to the nature of the role’s responsibilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Computer Science or a related technical field with six (6) or more years of technical engineering experience.
  • OR Bachelor’s Degree with eight (8) or more years of software engineering experience.
  • Equivalent professional experience may also be considered.
  • Experience with ROS2 (Robot Operating System 2).
  • Experience working with industrial robots such as ABB, KUKA, FANUC, or Universal Robots (UR).
  • Experience using simulation platforms including Isaac Sim and NVIDIA Omniverse.
  • Knowledge of Artificial Intelligence applications in robotics.
  • Experience with industrial communication protocols including OPC UA and MQTT.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25%.

Compensation

United States Salary Range: USD $119,800 – $234,700 annually

San Francisco Bay Area & New York City Salary Range: USD $160,200 – $261,000 annually

Actual compensation is determined based on skills, experience, qualifications, location, and business requirements.
