Tesla AI is seeking an AI Engineer, Manipulation, Optimus to develop advanced robotic manipulation algorithms for humanoid robots. This role focuses on building, deploying, and improving state-of-the-art robotics software that enables Optimus humanoid robots to perform useful tasks in real-world environments.

Through Optimus, Tesla is developing humanoid robots designed to operate in real-world environments. Engineers on the team build production-level robotics solutions that are deployed and utilized by thousands of humanoid robots.

Position Overview

The AI Engineer, Manipulation, Optimus develops and owns robotic manipulation software stacks from initial design through production deployment. The role focuses on creating advanced algorithms for object manipulation, robotic learning, simulation, planning, and control systems while addressing uncertainty in physical environments.

Key Responsibilities

Robotic Manipulation Development

  • Design and develop learned robotic manipulation software stacks and algorithms.
  • Create robotic manipulation capabilities including re-grasping, pick-and-place, and dexterous behaviors.
  • Develop solutions that enable useful robotic work in structured and unstructured environments.
  • Model robotic manipulation processes for analysis, simulation, planning, and controls.

AI & Machine Learning Engineering

  • Develop algorithms that adapt to uncertainty caused by measurements and physical interactions.
  • Apply deep imitation learning and reinforcement learning techniques to robotics applications.
  • Train and deploy real-world neural networks.
  • Build solutions using modern machine learning frameworks and distributed deep learning systems.

Software Architecture & Production Deployment

  • Support overall software architecture design and subsystem interface development.
  • Ship production-quality, safety-critical software.
  • Collaborate with robotics engineers and AI specialists to deliver scalable solutions.
  • Develop software used by real-world humanoid robot applications.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience developing production-quality modern C++ or Python applications.
  • Experience with deep imitation learning or reinforcement learning in practical applications.
  • Experience writing production-level Python using NumPy and PyTorch.
  • Experience with modern C++ development.
  • Proven experience training and deploying real-world neural networks.
  • Experience with robotics learning using tactile and/or vision-based sensors.
  • Familiarity with 3D computer vision and/or graphics pipelines.
  • Experience with Natural Language Processing.
  • Experience with distributed deep learning systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in robotics.
  • Experience with state estimation.
  • Experience with visual odometry.
  • Experience with SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping).
  • Experience with Structure from Motion.
