Amazon is seeking an Applied Scientist, Internal Audit to accelerate Data Science & Risk Intelligence initiatives within Amazon Internal Audit. This role focuses on developing machine learning, generative AI, and agentic AI solutions that enable audit teams to leverage data at scale, identify deeper patterns, surface insights, and strengthen risk mitigation.

Amazon Internal Audit’s mission is to help Amazon businesses improve controllership, operational efficiency, and customer experience. The team develops data science and risk intelligence solutions that support audit teams with advanced analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. The team works across data science, engineering, product management, and audit functions to develop scalable technologies that improve the effectiveness and efficiency of internal audit.
Position Overview
The Applied Scientist will own ambiguous and high-impact machine learning and generative AI problems from problem framing through production deployment and measurable impact. The role combines deep machine learning expertise with production architecture, agentic AI systems, statistical analysis, and applied research.
Key Responsibilities
Machine Learning & Generative AI
- Partner with audit teams, product managers, engineers, and scientists to define and deliver machine learning and generative AI products.
- Own complex problems end-to-end from problem framing through measurable business impact.
- Design, build, and manage agentic AI systems including multi-agent workflows, retrieval-augmented generation, and tool-using agents.
- Develop rigorous evaluation approaches using LLM-as-judge and human-aligned evaluation methods.
Data Science & Analytics
- Apply statistical analysis and classical machine learning to large datasets using SQL and scripting languages such as Python and R.
- Develop insights and recommendations that strengthen internal audit capabilities.
- Use data science techniques to identify patterns and surface risk-related insights.
AWS & Production AI Infrastructure
- Architect secure and scalable solutions using AWS machine learning and generative AI services.
- Work with services including Amazon Bedrock, AgentCore, and SageMaker.
- Own the lifecycle of solutions from design through production deployment, monitoring, and iterative improvement.
- Develop and maintain deployment pipelines, observability and tracing systems, and experimentation environments.
Research & Technical Leadership
- Identify and pursue emerging techniques through applied research.
- Share research findings through publications, conference talks, journal clubs, and other forums.
- Mentor junior scientists and engineers.
- Review technical designs and code.
- Help shape product and technical roadmaps.
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience building models for business applications.
- PhD, or Master’s degree with 4+ years of experience in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Machine Learning, or a related field.
- Experience programming in Java, C++, Python, or a related language.
- Experience with algorithms and data structures, parsing, numerical optimization, data mining, parallel and distributed computing, or high-performance computing.
- Experience with Machine Learning and Large Language Model fundamentals, including architecture, training and inference lifecycles, and model execution optimization.
- Experience building complex software systems successfully delivered to customers.
- Experience architecting or operating solutions on AWS or implementing cloud-based technology solutions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience using Unix/Linux.
- Professional software development experience.
- Experience designing and running generative AI evaluation frameworks.
- Experience with LLM-as-judge, human-alignment measurement, and output quality benchmarking.
- Hands-on experience with agentic AI frameworks and generative AI services such as Amazon Bedrock, SageMaker, LangGraph, and Strands.
- Experience building and maintaining production ML/AI infrastructure, including deployment pipelines, observability, tracing, and experimentation environments.
- Track record of applied research through publications, conference talks, or patents.
