Position Overview
The Store Director is responsible for leading all aspects of store operations, including team development, talent management, guest experience, financial performance, sales growth, safety, compliance, and operational improvement.
This role provides the opportunity to develop leadership skills through managing large teams, creating store strategies, driving business results, and building a guest-first culture.
Store Leadership Responsibilities
- Manage a large team of hourly team members, leaders, and leaders of leaders.
- Recruit, select, manage talent, and plan talent strategies across all store departments.
- Build and lead a guest-first culture across the store.
- Manage retail business financials, including payroll, profit and loss, and sales growth.
- Create store-specific strategies and manage teams to deliver results.
- Understand retail business fundamentals including sales trends, inventory management, guest shopping patterns, satisfaction, pricing, promotions, and specialty businesses.
- Set and plan total store quarterly business priorities and manage teams to achieve sales goals.
- Make business decisions by assessing market competition and understanding guest insights and feedback.
Key Responsibilities
Guest Experience & Team Development
- Lead a talent culture through onboarding, development, and growth of leaders.
- Drive accountability through clear expectations and consistent performance management.
- Create and deliver sustainable and equitable talent strategies with HR partnership.
- Maintain an approachable leadership style where team members can share concerns and issues are quickly resolved.
- Recruit, hire, and retain a passionate team with area-specific knowledge and expertise.
- Oversee scheduling processes to meet business needs and provide a consistent guest experience.
- Implement leadership schedules aligned with guest and business needs, including weekends, mornings, evenings, overnight, and seasonal adjustments.
- Promote inclusivity by valuing diverse voices and approaches while creating equitable experiences.
- Invest in personal and team training to enhance skills and capabilities.
- Model a welcoming experience by greeting guests while working.
- Engage with guests, understand their needs, and provide solutions.
- Drive a guest-obsessed culture across in-store and digital experiences.
- Support guest offerings including Target App, Target Circle Card, Target Circle, Drive Up, Order Pickup, and Circle 360 same-day delivery.
Store Business Operations & Sales Growth
- Build and execute plans to run an efficient operation and support future growth.
- Lead execution of best practices across the store.
- Identify operational shortages, create routines and action plans, and establish clear goals.
- Use financial, operational, safety, food safety, team, and guest reports to make business decisions.
- Drive financial accountability through sales trends, leadership headcount guidelines, payroll management, and overtime guidance.
- Teach teams how their roles contribute to sales growth and total store profitability.
- Assess competition and use guest insights and feedback to drive business performance.
- Build relationships within the store community to address local needs.
- Leverage field support partners to solve problems and improve operations.
- Set clear priorities by balancing competing priorities and demands.
Safety, Security & Compliance
- Own the safety culture and performance of the store.
- Model and recognize safe behaviors.
- Identify and correct hazards.
- Support incident response and validate investigations to drive sustainable solutions.
- Maintain accountability for team and guest safety.
- Validate in-store security culture through deterrence, response, and resolution.
- Ensure merchandise protection strategies are executed according to best practices.
- Follow safe and secure training and processes.
- Address store emergency and compliance needs.
- Demonstrate ethical conduct, safety, food safety, and compliance standards.

- Four-year degree or equivalent experience.

- Ability to access all areas of the building to respond to guest or team member issues.
- Ability to interpret instructions, reports, and information.
- Ability to accurately handle cash register operations as needed.
- Ability to climb up and down ladders as needed.
- Ability to scan, handle, and move merchandise efficiently and safely, including frequently lifting or moving merchandise up to 44 pounds without additional assistance.
- Ability to work in varying temperatures, humidity, and other elements while performing certain job duties, including Drive-Up and carryout.
- Ability to remain mobile for the duration of a scheduled shift.
- Flexible work schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays with reliable attendance.

Compensation & Benefits
The pay range for this position is USD $106,000 – $212,000 annually.
Pay is based on several factors which vary based on position. These include labor markets and, in some instances, may include education, work experience, and certifications.
