Job Purpose and Summary

At CVS Health, Pharmacy Technicians play a critical role in supporting pharmacy teams to consistently deliver on the company’s brand promise.

Within Retail locations, Pharmacy Technicians support pharmacy operations by helping ensure prescriptions are filled promptly, safely, and accurately while providing caring service that exceeds patient expectations.

Technicians operate as part of the pharmacy team through consistent application of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), best practices, and effective communication. Throughout their shifts and interactions with customers and colleagues, they demonstrate genuine care and contribute to a safe and inclusive culture where all people feel valued and empowered.

Once in role, Technicians are required to complete a rigorous company training program and satisfy all registration, licensing, and certification requirements according to their State’s Board of Pharmacy guidelines. Until all necessary requirements are completed, duties may be restricted by the Pharmacy Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support safe and effective pharmacy operations by following company SOPs at each workstation to help Pharmacists manage and improve patient health.
  • Follow pharmacy workflow procedures at each pharmacy workstation, including production, pick-up, drive-thru, and drop-off, for safe and accurate prescription fulfillment.
  • Contribute to positive patient experiences by showing empathy and genuine care while serving patients at pick-up, drive-thru, and over the phone.
  • Keep patients healthy by offering immunizations and other services at the register and over the phone.
  • Demonstrate compassionate care by solving or escalating patient problems.
  • Complete basic inventory activities, as permitted by law and directed by the pharmacy leadership team, including medication deliveries, cycle counts, returns-to-stocks, and waiting bin inventories.
  • Contribute to a high-performing team by embracing a growth mindset and being receptive to feedback.
  • Actively seek opportunities to expand clinical and technical knowledge to better assist patients.
  • Remain flexible for scheduling and business needs while contributing to a safe, inclusive, and engaging team environment.
  • Voluntarily travel to stores in the market to work shifts as needed by the business.
  • Understand and comply with federal, state, and local laws, regulations, professional standards, ethical principles, and CVS policies and procedures.
  • Support patient safety, controlled substance dispensing and recordkeeping compliance, and patient privacy and security.
  • Deliver additional patient health care services, including immunizations, point-of-care testing, and voluntarily staffing offsite clinics, where allowable by law and supported by required training and certification.

Pharmacy Technician Immunizer Responsibilities

  • Complete additional licensure and training requirements in compliance with state Board of Pharmacy regulations to obtain Technician Immunizer status.
  • Support preparing and administering vaccines.
  • Educate patients about the importance of vaccines and refer vaccination questions to the Pharmacist-on-duty.
  • Monitor for and respond to adverse reactions and report adverse reaction events according to public health requirements.
  • Review and collect patient information while tracking and documenting applicable patient details.
  • Monitor and manage vaccine supplies.

Required Qualifications

  • Must comply with any state board of pharmacy requirements or laws governing pharmacy practice, including age, education, and licensure/certification requirements.
  • If the state board of pharmacy does not address or mandate a minimum age requirement, must be at least 16 years of age.
  • If the state board of pharmacy does not address or mandate a minimum educational requirement, must have a high school diploma or equivalent, or be actively enrolled in high school or a high school equivalency program.
  • State-level licensure and national certification requirements vary by state.

  • Use math to solve problems, such as determining tablet quantities, day supply, and the number of full and additional bottles required to fill prescriptions.

  • Identify challenging patient or colleague interactions and choose the best course of action when faced with multiple options.

Physical Requirements

  • Remain mobile and upright for extended periods of time.
  • Lift, scan, and bag items.
  • Reach overhead and stretch or reach with the body, arms, and legs to grasp items.
  • Move fingers repetitively for picking, pinching, typing, or similar activities.
  • Extend hands and arms in multiple directions to place, move, or lift items.
  • Control precision and quickly adjust machines to exact positions.
  • Stoop to a considerable degree, including bending the spine at the waist to move items between low and high positions.
  • Maintain close visual acuity for activities such as transcribing, viewing computer terminals, and inspecting small parts.
  • Occasionally lift up to 20 lbs and/or exert up to 20 lbs of force.
  • Frequently lift up to 10 lbs and/or exert up to 10 lbs of force.
  • Consistently lift and/or exert negligible force to move objects.
  • Express and exchange ideas through spoken communication where detailed instructions must be accurately conveyed.
  • Receive detailed information through oral communication.
  • Complete additional tasks as directed by Supervisor or Manager.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1-3 years of previous experience as a Pharmacy Technician.
  • Previous experience in a pharmacy, retail, medical, or customer service setting.
  • Ability to work in the home store and across the market in other locations to meet business needs.
